[AIDS 2026] [aidsmap] Enhanced Access to Diagnostic Screening Improves Care for Advanced HIV

Two studies, presented at the 26th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2026) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and virtually on 26-31 July 2026, showed that consistent adherence to the World Health Organization (WHO) screening and diagnostic guidelines could improve the detection of opportunistic infections — particularly TB — in people with advanced HIV.

People with CD4 counts below 200, anyone with WHO stage 3 or 4 symptoms, and children under five years of age should be screened for TB using a GeneXpert assay and urine TB-LAM testing.

The two studies examined the implementation of screening and diagnostic algorithms in Malawi and eight countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
