Threat of HIV and TB Drug Resistance After U.S. Funding Cuts

Multiple models and viewpoints have discussed how the recent dismantling of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the resulting shuttering of multiple global health programmes, including the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), will lead to a dramatic increase in infectious disease burden worldwide. However, the potential for an additional untoward effect of abrupt closures in these important global health programmes, alongside possible reductions in National Institutes of Health funding for global health research, requires attention: the emergence of widespread drug resistance.
