A study evaluated the effectiveness of whole-genome sequencing (WGS)-guided treatment in shortening the duration of treatment for rifampicin-resistant TB. Conducted across 13 hospitals and 35 clinics in South Africa, the Phase 4 SMARTT trial used WGS and artificial intelligence to tailor individualized 4-drug, 6-month treatment regimens — achieving a comparable bacterial response and fewer unfavourable outcomes than standard care at the time (a 9-month, 7-drug course or an individualized 18-month regimen).
