Infectious Disease Advisor: Diabetes May Decrease TB Transmission Risk to Household Contacts

Household contacts exposed to a patient with TB and diabetes showed reduced risk for incident TB disease, indicating the need for further research to understand the dynamics between diabetes and TB transmission.

To evaluate whether diabetes affects TB transmission factors, investigators conducted a prospective study across 20 districts in Peru between September 2009 and August 2012. The analysis included patients (n=3109) aged 16 years and older with TB (index patients) who received a household visit within 2 weeks of their diagnosis, as well as their household contacts (n=12,767). The household contacts were evaluated for incident TB at baseline and at 6 and 12 months on the basis of the index patient’s diabetes status.
